Nothing comes close to the opulence of pre-war gilded Hutschenreuther designs.  They set a standard by which other Continental gilded china was judged.

This pattern, unnamed by our research, epitomizes "the good life" in Europe before WWII.   Imagine having your cheeseburger on a plate blanketed with lacey gold embossing - you don't have to.  Start your dinner service right now, for possibly less than what this beauty cost in 1935!

There are no chips, cracks or wear.   We detect a few knife marks (that Inga was always so darn heavy handed...) and what appears to be a spot where a cigarette was snuffed out - now that is drama at the dinner table. We have burnished the mark to correct, it is only slightly visible.

This plate bears a clear Hutschenreuther Selb crown lion mark indicating age and authenticity.   10 3/4" diameter, 99.5 on the glam-o-meter!

Bavarian Porcelain: Bavaria is a region within today's Germany, near Austria and Switzerland. Fine white china must be made from a clay mineral called kaolin, Bavaria is one of the few areas that has mass deposits of this clay, also known as china clay or kaolinite.

The earliest Bavarian china factory was founded in 1794, The Royal Bayreuth company made plates, tea cups, pitchers and figurines. Other Bavarian china companies, such as Johann Haviland, Winterling and Hutschenreuther, have operations that are more than a century old.

Bavarian china is characterized by fine translucent porcelain and hand-painted colorful decorations. While floral patterns are generally used on dinnerware, hand-painted figurines are also prevalent. Paint colors are almost exclusively blue, pink, yellow, green and red. Silver and gold trim is common as well.

Every piece of Bavarian china has an identification stamp on it. Antique Bavarian china stamps help to authenticate a piece by tracing a company's marking history.  Different makers change the bottom stamp regularly, so a certain stamp is indicative of a certain time period.

Hutschenreuther is the name of the family that established the production of porcelain in Northern Bavaria, starting in 1814. The company was founded in 1814 by Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther (1794-1845) in Hohenberg an der Eger, Bavaria, Germany. He had previously worked at the Wallendorf porcelain manufactory in Lichte (Wallendorf). After his death in 1845, the factory was headed by his widow, Johanna Hutschenreuther, and her two sons. From 1860, they produced hand-painted gilded porcelains. A large part of the factory was destroyed by a fire in 1848, but it was rebuilt. In 1857 Lorenz Hutschenreuther, the son of C.M. Hutschenreuther, established a porcelain factory in Selb. They expanded from 1902 to 1969 and were renamed Porzellanfabriken Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG Selb (Lorenz Hutschenreuther Porcelain Factories Company, Selb). Hutschenreuther acquired the following other porcelain manufacturers: Jaeger, Werner & Co., Selb (1906) Paul Mueller, Selb (1917) Bauscher brothers, Weiden (1927) Tirschenreuth porcelain factory (1927) Königszelt porcelain factory, Königszelt (today Jaworzyna Śląska), Silesia (1928) In 1969, Porzellanfabriken Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG Selb merged with C. M. Hutschenreuther of Hohenberg
